This was originally either the first or second post in April , but I went playing with things and it ended up here, hey ho .

Well here we go, this will be a thrill for all of you reading my ramblings , they will get progressively worse . Being not under the affluence of inkerhol anymore has led unfortunately to my rants / raves getting worse , please do not read if you are a wallflower.

I will put in words some of my odd trips / thoughts / plans etc regarding football some factual and some not so although I may delve into wine / women and song on occasions.

I decided on this course of action because the site I use and one up to a few years ago was good is nowadays going downhill. It got rid of a few wallflowers for the better of the site but now it’s who plays where , I’m in Mongolia on Sunday anyone know any fixtures , how do I get tickets for so and so game, do they issue . Try feckin looking.

And my main problem is people just taking , there are many on there who glean some marvelous information without giving anything back. Then we have the nimby pimby brigade , most left citing there were too many arguments on there , they still use the site for info. Parasites.

Is there a censor ( Leopold) on here ?

It will be about various topics , not just games visited , what is there to say about hopping ? The train was 4 minutes late , the train was 4 minutes early , this was the only game in Britain for a tick tonight , I’ve been 2960 games , yawn ,yawn feckin yawn. No one on here to tell me about my bad grammar , there really are some tossers sitting by their computers waiting a spelling  / grammar error , get a life.

DEFINITELY NO FECKIN WAFFLE.

Don’t you just get fed up of reading crap , I very rarely finish OR even start some peoples blogs / posts , rattling on about all and sundry , BORING . Be more interesting will you ,  get a sense of humour , you know who you are , but obviously it takes a lot to change the habits of a very humourless upbringing.

The U S of A is doing its best to organize itself a soccer pyramid , who knows we may see promotion / relegation some time soon. Changes  have been made recently and more are due to be implemented in the near future but anyway this is my take on the current system as it stands today 29/ 05/ 2019 or for my American readers 5/ 29/ 2019 .

At this moment in time the United States Soccer Federation ( USSF) has sanctioned 3 tiers of professional soccer , at the top of the pile at Tier 1 is the ‘Major League Soccer’ , then at Tier 2 is the ‘ United Soccer League’ Championship Division and then finally at the Tier 3 is the ‘USL’ Divison 1.

I’ll run through those divisions shortly but before that I would like to point out that although there are 70 teams represented at these 3 levels,  below Tier 1 there are 13 teams  that are either Reserve sides or  teams owned by MLS / USL Championship clubs with different names to their parent club  so only truly 57 clubs. Then there are 5 Canadian clubs at these levels so that then leaves us with 52 U S of A clubs at this Professional level.

These Reserves and Pseudo clubs will be pointed out as we go through the divisions. So where better to start than at Tier 1 and that is the MLS.

National Independent Soccer League (NISL). (USSF)

Despite the start date being only 10 weeks away news is very sketchy about teams / schedules etc.  Social media sites hint at an early June meeting to sort things out ! Supposedly a Fall – Spring season with a December / January break.

This league was founded in 2017 with the aim of a 10 team 2018 season start. Things went slowly and as stated only sanctioned in Feb 2019.

The league claims to have 8 cities/areas on board , namely –

Charlotte , Carolina.
Daytona Beach , Central Florida.
Los Angeles ,California.
New England , Connecticut.
Philadelphia Fury , Pennsylvania. ( Allegedly at Franklin Field).

(The 1904 comes from S being the 19th letter of the alphabet and for our American readers 04 is for D ). Memories of my favourite team name ever L A Lazers ( Let all zealous earthlings radiate soccer). Only in the U S of A.

There is a lot to do in such a short time I am sceptical as to whether this will happen.

NPSL Pro Premier.  (2020). (USASA).

The other major National Association in the USA the United States Amateur Soccer Association  (USASA) is looking at forming a National Professional Soccer League by 2020 to stand alongside Tier 3 USL Div 1. The National Premier Soccer League ( NPSL) has it’s precursor the ‘Founders Cup’  already scheduled with 11 teams kicking off in August and finishing in November.

This should lead to a the real thing a Spring start for  Season  2020.

Couple of days rest and off again , do I need a holiday ?

Thursday May 23.

 

Third trip to Georgia , my OCD was kicking in and I needed 5 grounds to visit to satisfy my ”completeism” at top tier level in UEFA and at the beginning of the 2019 season these were 5 to visit, namely Dila Gori (back at their own ground, I saw them at home last season at Mikheil Meskhi 2) , Dinamo Batumi (at a newly built Dinamo Base, Angisa , I saw them at home last season at the Rugby Ground) , FC Rustavi at the Poldavi Stadium , Sioni Bolnisi at Tamaz Stepania Stadium and WIT Georgia at Mtskheta Park.

These 5 became 4 when it was announced WIT Georgia would be staging home games at Mikheil Meskhi 2 and then FC Rustavi announced a switch to a brand new Academy venue (see photo , crap ) . So it was 4.

Booked Wizz in advance , 2 months ago , had a punt at fixtures being to my liking , more of that later. Anyway outward Thursday 23rd May and returning May 30th came up at a staggering £80.48 using Wizz Discount card (Group Card) , so fellow passengers paid the same. This was ”Travel Light”, always makes me smirk when using that ticketing option . Departure was at 16-10 and left promptly if not possibly a tad early !

Tbilisi was a destination  option but it was at least treble +  the price and with at least one change for the cheaper options.

So with our Wizz sized bags crammed with underpants / tee shirts/ tooth paste , brush  etc we boarded the plane at Luton ( W9 6424 )  heading to ‘Bob the Builder’ Airport in Kutaisi  ( always another chuckle ).

Car was also booked with Wizz and their partner ‘Rentalcars.com’  the ‘Meet and Greet” option was used because of the timing of arrival , this car hire I thought was a bit expensive although inc Sat Nav / all insurance etc, but it was split 3 ways , over £ 90 each even with Wizz discount ! Arrived spot on and sailed through Customs / Immigration and we were  with a chap waving my name in everyone’s face before 01-00 , he walked us to car , only about 100 yards away telling us the  procedure on the way back and then giving us his number to phone when ready to hand back the car saying he would be at the airport . Then we were away and in our hotel at 01-30. Obviously needed to book a decent hotel with a 24hour Reception Desk ,  Hualeng Hotel (3*) fitted the bill , so also pre booked a Deluxe Triple , 3 x single en suite, Wi Fi, Parking, breakfast  etc for the princely sum of £31 , yes £10 each.

So refreshed after a good kip by my standards , about 5 hours , it was continental breakfast and time to head off to the first game of the day. With it being a holiday weekend in Georgia , Independance Day on Sunday 26thth  May I was unsure what the traffic would be like , NO caravans here ! This holiday recognizes Georgia’s indpendance from Russia in 1918 , they joined the USSR in 1922 and the celebration was put on hold until the Soviet collapse in 1991 when once again they gained independence , this time on April 9th. Yes you’ve guessed it , that’s also a holiday , this time  ‘National Unity’ day. Hope we get a ”Brexit Day” annual holiday when we eventually get our freedom from that EU thingy.

Anyway with a 180 mile trip in front of us we departed hotel at 09-00 , this was to get to Tamaz Stepania Stadium in Bolnisi for a 17-00 kick off.  This would allow a call in at Dila Gori Stadium  en route to check parking options for evening game and check in at the Paradise Hotel in Tbilisi , new tick for me but good first impressions , just a short detour off route , then allowing for hotel stop ( timings done from same point)  a serious cutting corners / speeding attempt  between Dila Gori / Hotel and Sioni Bolnisi stadiums  ! This is a 92 mile journey and Google has it as a 2 hours 15′ journey and my favourite ‘Rome2Rio’ as 1 hour 58′.  This was  for after the game and the return journey , finishing at 18-50 and kick off at Dila Gori at 21-00. A tight trip which will need a bit of speeding , unfortunately some of it in and around Tbilisi. It was timed at exactly 1 hour 55′ journey with nothing excessive speed wise , Tbilisi was not a problem at that time of day ?

Parking was made at ground to ensure the fastest possible getaway , I do not like watching games when you need a quick drive to a second game. Unlike most , possibly many of you reading this I have to watch 90 minutes of a game or at least be in the ground for the duration of game.

There are so many ”Plastic” hoppers about nowadays that I  find it impossible to have a discussion with about the hobby to many , it’s so pointless as they have NO standards. Each to their own I say despite me not being able to understand that somee get their late , leave early , talk all game showing no interest in football , must have a programme , watch 80 minute league games for a tick, must have a programme , will tick for anything boys / girls / yoofs / reserves / academy / etc etc, it’s baffling to me , I can only assume their lives are so boring they need to get out of the house at every opportunity ? And they are so touchy about the subject.

Anyway the game kicked off a minute down , and immediately the heavens opened , absolutely torrential , still away we went and Rustavi took the lead on 5′ with a good left foot drive from Zaza Tsitskishvilli. It got worse for Sioni with an own goal sliced in by defender Tamaz Makatsaria. The deluge stopped on 15′ but it left a lot of lying water and there were pools everywhere , there was no further goals in the first half.

Rustavi went 3-0 up on 62′ with a neat chip and finish by Luka Silagadze , this led to a free for all and not with handbags. Punches and kicks were thrown , when it all died down the officials gathered and discussed and it led to 1 red for Sioni and 2 for Rustavi. Not seen a proper punch up for a long time !

Anyway this obviously gave Sioni a half chance with 30 minutes left and one man more , it looked beyond them but on 84′ Dato Kirkitadze with a fluke gave them a bit of hope , they still looked out of it but an own goal by Zurab Japlashvilli on 88′ gave further hope and then on 90′ +3′  Lovaz Kmaladz equalized with a good header.

The players / crowd went wild and it was time to edge towards the exit and our car , our driver had exited and sped to car and was revving up waiting when I ambled up. So with 5 minutes extra time we now had 2 hours 5′ for our 1 hour 55′ journey. Where’s Hamilton when you need him.

Anyway Bottas did well , missing some oncoming traffic by a whisker at times and we managed to arrive at the ground with 10 minutes to spare, parking was now more difficult but with those magic words of ”Press” we were shown to a decent spot, no rush after the game so getting in was now  the only concern. An envelope as promised was waiting on reception but with only 2 comps inside , the steward ushered us all in .  3 minutes to kick off , sent  the minion off to get a team sheet , it took me a while to settle down after the tension of the 2 hour drive , really do not like deadlines.

Poor game with the draw a fair result but at least a decent crowd  and a good atmosphere. Saburtalo missed their chance of going clear at the top ( see table below ).

Saburtalo opened the scoring on 67 ‘ when a long distance shot by  ‘Gega’ Diassamidze was helped into the net by keeper Luka Gugeshasvilli , an own goal in my book but claimed by the forward.

Dila equalized on 75′ with a decent header by Giorgi Kutsia.

 

Saturday , 25th.

Day off for me , I had found my 2 colleagues a couple of ganes in the Tbilisi Regional League , they had an 11-00 & a 13-00 , missing a few minutes at the second match.  Too many reserves / academy teams involved for me but mates have no principals ! They reported a 4-1 and a 11-2 . I had an early breakfast and then back to bed with a ”Do not Disturb” sign on the door when they went out.

I had an amble about in the afternoon , found a local bar , scandalous prices , nearly 50p a 500 ml bottle. Went back to hotel for a meal and although a limited menu it was good cheap food. Wine by the bottle very cheap. Enquired if they were open in the evening for a drink or 6 and the reply was an ” of course”.

Back to the room for a lie down , then the ‘crunchers’ arrived at about 17-00 , just calling in and then they were out again , I did warn them about it being quiet out there because of the holiday and we agreed to meet here at 21 – 00 for an evening meal / drink / chin wag and I could make a start on an the update to the ”The Hopper Laws FIFA edition 2020” while waiting their return. I  will publicize details of where to obtain it when available , only for the serious hoppers , NOT the new variety and many of the old. Will keep costs to a minimum and there will still be a 10% discount to ”’Clique” members.

Most fixtures  over here they are at the whim of officials , in this case the game kick off time one that has been altered 3 times in recent weeks managed to kick off 30 min’s  earlier than I expected. 18-00 was my intended kick off until arrival when it was mentioned it was 17 -30 only as they teams were entering the pitch at 17-25 , as usual I was well early so no problem but it caught a fair few out.

Shevardeni were inept up front and it had 0-0 written all over it from a very early stage , Shevardeni needed the points to have any chance of catching Merani Tbilisi at the top  (see league table above without  this game added). The goals tallies for the season says it all , scored 17 in 13 games and conceded 5 and they are in 2nd position . They were never going to concede and were relying on a quick break to steal a 1-0 win , that never looked like happening.

Few  seats far side , nothing on 3 sides , the players / officials enter from building at top right. Pathetic , not been many worse than this in top tiers . Hope it doesn’t rain , no fecking press box here , just a TV gantry this near side and floodlights added since photo above taken.

Official attendance should be interesting , at the beginning about 130 but by the end about 600.  (See above , 500).

Game won on 31 ‘ by Dnamo striker Levan Kutalia’s break and deft left foot chip over Rustavi keeper  that kept the travelling 40 happy. Bit of a journeyman our Levan this being his 10th different club in 8 years ! Having a decent season , his goal today was his 8th in 15 appearances.

Erovnuli League Round 16.

Dinamo Batumi  v  Sioni Bolnisi.

5 – 1.

Att – 6,000. Guestimate.

Saved the best for last , brand new academy venue , again ! But much better than previous evening. If capacity is as stated 6,000 there were 7,000 here, I’ve not got official attendance yet , would guess at 6,000 and a  raucous bunch they were.

Batumi needed to better Saburtalos goal difference by 1 tonight to go top if both teams win. Batumi started slowly and it took nearly 40 mins to score the opener  with a cracking left foot strike from the edge of the box by Vladimir Mamuchasvilli and that was  how the first half finished.

The second half was a cracker with goals on 61′ with a penalty by Brazilian Gabriel Ramos Da Penha , ’twas never a penalty , a forward was tripped a yard outside of box , then a 25 yarder by Nigerian Benjamin Teidi put Batumi 3 – 0 up. Vladimir scored again with a chip from edge of box after a neat dribble which then put Batumi top of the league a local scribe told me.

Not for long though , an offside handball goal on 84′ by Tornike Tarkhnishvilli ( I think) put a dampener on procedings , but then the big crowd went wild when Dinamo scored with 20 seconds left of the + 3 to play with a cracking right foot shot from the edge of the box by Niklos Sabanadze, this was enough to put Dinamo top.

Manchester to LAX via Amsterdam using KLM 1072 / KLM 603.

Out of Arrivals fairly quickly and Car Rental awaiting and away by 16-40.

Tiers I refer to below are my own work as there are no official tiers in USA football below tier 3.

A game had shown for the Tuesday evening at fairly short notice , in fact 2 in the U S Open Cup ( AKA Lamar Hunt) R 1 , both at Orange County Great Park , Irvine.

One on the Championship Stadium and one on the new ‘Field 25’ about 200 yards away. Field 25 is not a patch on the main show stadium , I’ll be back as Arnie said.

The game at the ‘Championship Stadium’ was Orange County FC ( National Premier Soccer League , Tier 4 )  v  F C Golden State Force ( USL Div 2 , Tier 4 ) and my choice of game was Cal F C ( United Premier Soccer League , Tier 5 )  v  FC Mulhouse Portland ( NPSL , Tier 4 ) which was at ‘Field  25’  both at 19-30 unfortunately , if  I was German I could have ticked the 2 .

@ Great Parks ‘Field 25’, Skyhawk Way , Irvine.

Attendance  –  50.

Fairly local journey  for FCM Portland from Vancouver , Washington , just a mere 1,000 mile , 16 hour road journey for this tie. Obviously FCMP used the flying method in this instance , a 2 and a half hour non stop flight from Portland into LAX.  With an overnight stop it’s not a cheap competition to be in , but of course expenses are reimbursed.

2 away sides in other ties had problems with NTX Rayados flight to Little Rock being cancelled which resulted in them hiring a coach for a 5 hour road journey in lousy weather which involved a flat tyre, at least they won on penalties .

Also FC Denver suffered a cancelled flight to Midland , Texas , which  meant rebooking to El Paso and then hiring a coach for a 4 hour desert drive to the game at Midland-Odessa , they also managed a win beating the Sockers 2-1.

Love this Open Cup.

Whereas Golden State Force had a monstrous 35 mile drive for the other game taking place here at Great Parks!

FCMP do indeed have a tie with FC Mulhouse from France and they play in the West Region (N W Conference) of the NPSL. They claimed not to be match fit / tired after the journey at the post match interviews , they haven’t played a game yet this season , the first scheduled league game is this Saturday , May 18th. Excuses , excuses.

Fair point re match fitness as unbeaten Cal FC have an 8 match unbeaten start to their league campaign with 7 wins.

This Cal win has set up a fascinating game next Tuesday at Las Vegas Lights , I’ve changed my  itinerary to fit it in. ‘Fox’ presenter and ex Cal FC Coach / Scout  Erik Wynalda   who made a lot of recommendations for Cal FC’s  famous side that beat Portland Timbers in this cup in 2012 is now in charge of the ‘Lights’ and he later took some Cal players to Vegas.

Cal FC from Ventura County had visions of joining the USL Div 2 for 2020 but have had a rethink and will be a member of the NPSL Founders Cup starting in August 2019 , this a tester for the real thing a new Premier Division of the NPSL to join the USA  pyramid at tier 3 ?

This is Cal FC’s 4th home game so far in this competition and they’ve played at 4 different grounds !

1st Q Rd. 22/09/2018 v San Nicholas , 3-1 @ Calabasas High School .

3rd Q Rd. 18/10/2018 v California Utd , 2-2 @ Rolland Stadium , Carl Lutheren University. Abandoned 89 mins  (Weather issues).

3rd Q Rd. ( Take 2) 16/01/2019 v California Utd , 1-1 AET. 7-6 on pens @ Orange County Great Parks , Field 18.

Then the above game visited at Orange County Great Parks , Field 25.

They also had a problem after the 1st Q Rd when San Nicholas put in a protest re the eligibility of Cal FC.  The rules of competition said that competing teams have  had to be members of a league on a set date (Aug 13, 2018) and Cal FC were not playing on that date because their new season beginning in September . BUT they had merged with La Roma and formed a new club to begin playing again in 2018 and La Roma were a member of a league on said date so the protest was thrown out.

I chose the fixture as I don’t watch football in the USL Div 2 or its clubs  because this is the renamed PDSL from the previous season and is an age restricted team / squad / U 23 division.

Their words  ”USL League Two (USL2) is the leader in pre-professional soccer in the U.S. and Canada. USL2 franchises provide the elite amateur U23 player an opportunity to train and compete at the highest level while maintaining collegiate eligibility” .

In fact in season 2017 I visited a game at Western Mass Pioneers in the PDSL on 20th June , 2017, finished 3-2 v AC Connecticut , this does not appear as a tick of ground or a game seen in MY records  as the league doesn’t count on MY register , just the same as boys / girls / youths / Reserves etc.

Anyway Cal F C from the tier 5 ‘United Premier Soccer League’ totally outplayed their opponents from a league / division one tier higher and ran out 5 – 1 winners including a hat trick from ex Chicago Fire Orr Barrouch who’s an Israeli U23 International and still only 27 who starred in a result that flattered FCMP.

There was a scare on 30 mins when the floodlights went out , only here not at Championship Stadium , anyway it was 3-0 at the time and the FCMP players were taking it better than me with an odd plea (jokingly) to the referee to call it off ! Normal service was resumed a few minutes later.

The complex ‘Great Parks’ is impressive and brand spanking new. 30 odd soccer pitches inc 2 stadium pitches plus many other forms of sports venues.

Also its only a  50 mile , one hour drive from LAX , well that’s on a good day , on a Tuesday teatime it took about 100 minutes , bloody traffic was unbelievable. Still the SatNav was useful and arrived in plenty of time.

Anyway we found ‘Field 25’ easily , it has its own entrance off Skyhawk Way. The fixture / results sites we all look at still has both games at ‘Championship Stadium’ at the same time !!

After the game it was a 10 minute drive along the I-5 N to the overnight pit stop in Tustin at the Key Inn, a nice big en-suite , one Queen bed ( mine ) and a single , Wi Fi , Parking , Breakfast included all for £59. Cheap shopping next door and a Liqor Store , so we topped up the Duty Free with some hefty Craft IPA’s.

Had a 2 hour chill by the pool , yes even at that time of night.

Wednesday, May 8, 2019.

Lie in and after breakfast it was away to Fresno at 10-00. Rome2Rio has it as a 255 mile 4 hour 15′ journey. It took about 7 hours but at a leisurely pace and a pit stop in Santa Clarita.

Arrived in Fresno about 17-00 , time to check in at the Vagabond Inn on South East Avenue , $70 for en suite double , 2 x queen beds, b/fast and plenty of parking then off to the Grizzlies Ground for the game arriving at 18-30.

Capacity of 10,000 at the Grizzlies baseball ground Chukhansi Park which was not tested tonight just the 2,968 attending on a bad weather night.

Fresno were one of 2 unbeaten sides in the Championship the other being Tampa Bay Rowdies of the Eastern Conference. Sacramento were here to spoil the stats in the Highway 99 derby game , it’s only a 2 and a half hour 270 mile road journey.

And Sacramento did spoil the party with a disputed headed goal on 29′ by Sam Werner , claims of handball against him went ignored , with pretty lino Salma Perez taking most of the flak from Fresno’s English coach Adam Smith who was eventually shown to the stand. The hat trick king ( hat tricks at all levels in England and F A Cup and International)  assistant coach Robbie Earnshaw was less vociferous but post match told me he was livid. Robbie is building a coaching career over here with an aim to get to the Premier League.

Beer night . $1 a can / bottle.

Adam John scored twice in the first half followed by a James Musa strike to give the home side a 3-0 lead after 70′ only for RGVT to pull one back with a Maalique Foster goal immediately after but they never looked like making any further additions and it was easy for Phoenix to play the game out.

Decent crowd of 6,715 in a ground with a capacity of 7,707 , so not too much spare room and the atmosphere was good especially when the $1 beer started to kick in , the beer garden was well populated.

High Desert Elite F C   2 v 1  Riverside Coras.

Riverside took the lead on the half hour through Brayan , 5 minutes later Sergio Buenrastro equalized .

On 85 came the game changer when Cora’s Mike Mercado was sent off which led to a siege on the Cora goal and an Omar Mattute winner on 90 +4.

Nearly 42 years after visiting Vegas for the Quicksilvers v Rochester Lancers NASL game on the 17/07/1977 at the Las Vegas Stadium ( 1-0 , 5,615 ) it was back to visit the Lights .The Quicksilvers were a one season wonder , brought to Vegas by owner Frank Keegan  who had bought Baltimore Comets for the  75 season and relocated to San Diego (Jaws) for 76 season and then to Vegas for 77.Following a reasonable 1977 season with a mainly Portuguese line up inc Eusebio , Coelho , Toni & Abel ,  in fact the opening home game that season pitted Eusebio against Pele’s Cosmos on April 9 , 1977 , this resulted in Pele putting Eusebio out of the game with a slide tackle on 38′. Quicksilvers won the game 1-0 with an Arbelez goal in front of 11,896 , the capacity was 14,926 in them far off days. For the 13 game home season Quicksilvers averaged a reasonable 7,092 but still ended the season in financial crisis , owing the stadium rent of $32,000, with all this debt Keegan sold out and the club was moved again , this time back again to San Diego and the ‘Sockers’ were formed , they stuck around for a further 18 years in San Diego. 7 years till 84 as a member of the  NASL then the remainder of their life as an Indoor League team.

So now it ‘s off to Cashman Field for the US Open Cup game v Cal FC . Cashman being very centrally located unlike Vegas Stadium , that was a 13 mile trek with limited transport , had to hitch back.

Tonight the game was a tester for me , the home league game on May 11th v Colorado Springs  had a crowd of 7,023 and on the 5th of May v Sacramento Republic there were 7,487.  So as is the norm elsewhere in the world , cup crowds are down but then again the opposition were not a big draw for the fans despite being a big thing for the players  with lots of connections . Lights coach was ex Cal and 2 of the 4 cup tied players were due to being at Cal previously.

Goals by Sammy Ochoa on 13′ and one by Victor Rojas on 50’ won the game for the  ‘Lights’. Both resulted from runs down the left and crosses , the first seeing a header in by Ochoa and the second a nice flick in by Rojas.

At times a bad tempered affair spilled over at the end ( 92′) and ‘Lights’ Jonathan Levin and the substituted Cal player Romario Lomeli were both sent off after a fracas.

Reason for the kick off being 14 – 30 was that Boxer Stadium has no lights and ESPN needed an afternoon live game and this suited the bill. Who am I to complain ? $ 10 admission again.

El Farolito are past winners of the US Open Cup , winning it when still a semi pro competition in 1993 when they were called CD Mexico . The final against Oakford PA side United German Hungarians was played at the neutral Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday July 17 , with CD Mexico winning the 80th year of the Cup by 5 -0.

Tonight Torros coach Adam Smith played a dangerous game having 7 first teamers on the bench  for Fresno  , pre match the talk was he’s made a mistake. Fresno lived dangerously but scored the only goal after  75 mins , first teamer Qudus Lawal brought on at half time pounced on a blunder by El Farolito keeper Luis Castro who dropped the ball at Lawal’s feet and he shot home.

Had to decline an offer of a free dinner / drink at the teams restaurant ( El Farolito )after game  , great shame but needed a quick getaway to get to Sacramento for the second game of the day Sacramento Republic v Reno 1868 @ 19-30.

Have just arrived at Papa Murphy’s Park 45 minutes before kick off and have settled down in press box writing these  notes , estimated journey time of 1 hour 45 ‘ became 2 hours 30 ‘ , the traffic is dreadful over here. Report of Republic game to follow below.

Also the previous season on 03 / 07 / 77 I visited for Sacramento Spirits v  New York Apollo (Again) for a 2-1 , 3,640 @ the Sacramento State Stadium in the American Soccer League .

Well tonight was an easy chance to compare the League with the Open Cup as Reno won 4-1 here 4 days earlier in a league game.

Tonight the Republic started with 7 players the same as Saturday Reno only 4 , some were cup tied of course and some rested , those rested were mainly on the subs bench.

Attendance tonight was 2,014 compared with 10,630 on Saturday , the weather tonight was horrendous , heavy rain for most of the game , so glad I had a nice dry seat in press box.

The game was played on a very heavy field with lying water in parts and was a dour struggle between the Interstate-80 rivals. Republic just about worth their win but Reno had a couple of good chances to win the game. So the Republic put Reno out of the Open Cup for the third successive season.

Attendance – 22,001. ( Yeh sure). Capacity 22,000 (There were plenty of empty seats, announced as sell out).

The rain cleared by mid day then the rest of the day was warm and windy.

Got to ground early to enable finding Reserved Parking / Comps / Pre match dinner.

Both squads nearly at full strength , no petty squabbles to carry over to Sunday for the return game.

Decent game , LA F C were totally dominant and should have scored more.

Star home man Carlos Vela declined to play for Mexico in Gold Cup and so is gracing LAFC with his presence at the moment  , scored the opener and ran the show. He tired a bit towards the end when he had a couple of good chances to widen the scoreline. Uruguayan Diego Rossi added a second towards the end and it finished 2-0.

This tickled me = Remember kick off is 19-00.

There was a sporting alternative for the Friday evening , the LA Temptation were at home @ 19-00 at Citizens Business Park Arena in Ontario , Ca , against the Atlanta Steam in the American Football Lingerie Legends League , only a 2 hour drive away but the driver had had a couple so we had to give it away.

Saturday , May , 18, 2019.

Well rested after a nice day in Bakersfield on the Friday with a few beers and lunch outdoors with an early night by my standards.

Had an early Continental breakfast with a couple of rolls in a doggy bag and away just after 07-00 for the projected ( Rome2Rio ) journey of 3 hrs 34′. This was a reasonable guess and we arrived at Avaya at 11-00.

San Jose Earthquakes  4 v  1 Chicago Fire.

Another nearly 42 years since last visit , that time it was for San Jose Earthquakes on 27/ 06 / 77 with the visit of Tampa Bay Rowdies in the NASL  , Rowdies winning 4 -1 @ Spartan Stadium in front of 17,612.

The early kick off as is the norm around the world was for TV purposes.

It was to be a MLS history making game , all season long 36 year old San Jose striker Chris Wondolowski has been after a goal to equal Landon Donovan’s goals total of 145 in MLS games. Today after 20 minutes he did just that.

Not to be content with that he went on to beat that record to stand all alone as the MLS’s leading goalscorer with an assist by Chicago Fire keeper David Ousted on 47 minutes , Ousted kindly dropping the ball at Chris’s feet so he could tap the ball in for 146 . Two more followed and now the record is 148 with more to follow. Only 2 players are anywhere near him and still playing , they are Colorado Rapids striker Kei Kamara with 119  and Bradley Wright Phillips on 107 for New York Red Bulls , both are aged 34 and nearing their American’s end.

Chicago Fire , rubbish on the day pulled a goal back but the 4-1 certainly flattered them !

Then it was an 85 mile / 2 hour slow drive to Napa for Saturday game number  2. Arrived at planned 3253 Browns Valley Road , Napa and the Hop Creek Brew Pub. Good hour to kill and had a couple of ‘Cheater’ pints , one of their own ‘Sucker Punch’ IPA @ 7-5% ABV  followed by another ‘Cheater’ of ‘Block Party’ @ 7-8% ABV.  ‘Block Party’ brewed and paid for by host Stacey. Ta.

Driver not impressed with my drinking but at least his coffee was only a $1 for as much as he wanted. Had a quick sandwich as well , bloody hell I had to take half to the game as it was enormous.

Arrived at 18-15 and settled down in Press Box , mate got himself in too, then just to rub it in , it was ‘Tannery Bend Beerworks’ day at Dodd Stadium with free samples upstairs for officials , although it was in half pint plastic glasses. It did not affect the alcoholic effect of the 7-0%  ABV ‘North Eastern IPA’,  in olden days I would have been a meess , today just happy.

Sacramento Gold made short work of Napa winning easily , first half was a fair contest with Gold only 2-1 up at half time but they were well on top for the second half and won easily 4-1 . Rainy night and the far side of ground not being used.

Long drive back to Bakersfield , the sandwich went down well. Got back at 01-50 and in bed by 02-00 with a decision in morning as to how we feel whether to do the morning game which means a departure of about 08-00 . I went to bed with a feeling of why not , last day with an early finish and in hotel on Sunday  night by 20-00 with no rush to get up on the Monday , just the driver to convince now !

One of the highlights of the Southern California League season pitted Premier Div  sides the ‘Fighting Irish’ Buena Park who are 3rd in the division at the moment with 5th place FC CaliGators , Buena Park have ambitions to finish as runners up to already champions FC Golden State Force , they’ve won the league already being unbeaten at the moment with a W16 D1 LO record , below them is a  2 or 3 team battle for runners up . Such is the gap that the next best team with least losses is Buena Park with 5. Although FCGSF did slip up in the last 16 of this cup losing at home to FC Golden State Industry 1-0 @ Monrovia High School Turf.

The difference in the side was leading goal scorer Nate Da Rosa who scored a goal in each half for the Irish, Nate is currently also playing for NPSL side Temecula in a level above this and could go higher still.

This was Finals day for SoCal with Finals @ 09-00 , 11-30 , 14-00 & @ 16-30 with the showcase Final being the game mentioned , the admission was free .

Goals either side of half time , firstly on 34 by Elijah Rice with a deft chip over the home keeper and then Dallin Cutler on 60 wrapped this up for San Diego and kept their hopes up of progression post league.

Then check into Motel 6, Riverside West , Jurupa Valley . It took 15 minutes so checked in by 19-15 , few bottled beers from brew pub  trips into fridge and have a lie down.

These are the ‘Canadian Soccer League’ (CSL) –  

 

 

Plus the Soccer Federation of Canada (SC) –

Both are not recognised by FIFA or CONCACAF.

The league considers itself alongside League 1 Ontario and the Premiere Ligue de Soccer du Quebec at a level just below the new ‘Canadian Premier League’ for 2019 season , it’s been a well established league in the Ontario / Quebec area for many years.

Starting life as the ‘National Soccer League’ (NSL) between 1926 – 1993  then becoming the ‘Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL)  between 1994 – 1997 and then the Canadian Professional Soccer League ( CPSL) between 1998 – 2005 and finally becoming the ‘CSL’ in 2006.

The league were originally affiliated to the ‘Canadian Soccer Association’. (CSA) , this association being a member of FIFA & CONCACAF but after accusations of money laundering / match fixing between 2009 and 2013 they were finally expelled from the  ‘CSA’ in 2013 with violation of rules and regulations given as the reason , they were given a one year stay of execution after many appeals to allow teams and the league to sort themselves out.

There was no improvement to the league during 2013 season and the league  joined the newly formed ‘SFC’ in time to start the 2014 season. The acceptance into the ‘SFC’ is purely insurance cover against personal injury liability , there is no football accountability / governance by the ‘SFC’.

There was one game proven to have been fixed , that was the Trois-Rivieres Attak against Toronto Croatia fixture on September 12, 2009 with £13,000 allegedly being paid in bribes to Toronto Croatia player Antonijo Zupan to share with team mates to ensure losing to Attak , during the game Zupan missed a penalty that would have made it 2-2.  Attak eventually won 4-1.

Many more games  in Canada and elsewhere were  looked at by the  Royal Canadian Mounted Police , Interpol & the Canadian Gaming Commission .

6 members of a German on line betting group were jailed at Bochum court with the 2 leaders Marijo Cvrtak and Ante Sapina both getting a 5 and a half years jail sentence , this was for and including the Canadian case and many other football games including a World Cup 2010 qualifier between Lichtenstein and Finland in Sept 2009 where the referee Bosnian Novo Panic was bribed to ensure 2 second half goals , the second of which was a disputed penalty.

These cases were amongst the 200 odd games alleged to have been fixed by the group.

I saw 3 games in the NSL in 1979 , those at London City v Bradford Marshlanders 2-0, ( 02/07) , Toronto Ukrania v Bradford Marshlanders 1-1, (09/07) & Montreal Stars v Bradford Marshlanders 5-0, (14/07) and I have no recollection of anything untoward happening during the games  , but then  I also can’t remember what happened yesterday !

One thing I do remember was an ex Stockport County pro Tommy Henderson playing for Bradford , he was amazed when I struck up a conversation with him at the first of those games , in Montreal he accused me of stalking him when having a post match drink on the team coach back to Toronto.

The league went down from 16 clubs in 2012 to 12 when teams jumped ship for the 2013 season , first to go before the start of the 2013 season were the Academy sides of FC Toronto and of Montreal Impact.

Montreal finished second in the top div league season and reached the Play/Off Final  losing to Divisional champions Toronto Croatia 1-0 in the P/O Final . This final was played on a wet / windy Sunday afternoon at Centennial Stadium , Etobicoke in front of only 200 spectators.

Toronto had won the 2nd division league  season but then they lost out in their first play off game in the Q-F’s at home to Mississauga Eagles ‘B’ 2-0.

The teams had to be wary of being involved in what was / is a ”pirate’ league / Association.

Allegations of match fixing were still rife and before season 2016 started  the Royal Canadian Mounted Police became involved in February 2016 in investigations  which led to  all league games in season 2016 being monitored by league officials for odd events !

The league is still going and as mentioned it considers itself just below the Canadian Premier League.

Well it’s happening again , another attempt at a National Professional Soccer League in Canada. , what can one say , perhaps ”with glowing hearts we see thee rise ” is a tad over the top ?

I”ll get to the new Canadian Premier League in good time but first a look at previous efforts , there has only really been two real national attempts firstly in 1983 with the ”Canadian Professional Soccer League”, the league started with 6 clubs on May 21st  but by Rounds 7 & 8 it  had lost Toronto Nationals closely followed by Inter Montreal. The league limped on for 5 more rounds before the clubs called time on July 10th and disbanded the league. It was decided to play a 4 team play off with the remaining clubs to decide a champion , 2 best of 3 semi finals ended up with Edmonton Eagles winning home and away against Calgary Mustangs  in one and in the other it took Hamilton Steelers 3 games to overcome Mississauga Croatia.

So 73 days after the start of the league we come to the one leg final at the Clarke Stadium in  Edmonton to finish the shortened season. On Aug 1st the Eagles dominated the game and beat the Steelers by 2-0. So that was a condensed version of the first attempt.

That was the end for that first attempt.

The next effort was timed well , it was in 1987 when it was  tried again , this on the back of Canada being at the Mexico World Cup in 1986 , enthusiasm was high and the time was ripe. Canada had lost all their games in Mexico , playing 3 games against France, Hungary and the Soviet Union but they put up a spirited display only conceding 5 goals and pushing France in their opening game in Leon and only losing 1-0.

So the ”Canadian Soccer League” was formed in 1987 , this time starting with 8 clubs and having an East and a West Conference each with 4 clubs. The playing season was 20 league games followed by a play off for the title of Champions.

Both conference winners made it through the play offs and played in the one off final in Calgary with Calgary Kickers beating Hamilton Steelers 2-1.

So the Steelers had lost in this final and the one in 83 , unfortunately for them they also lost the next 3 finals.

So 5 consecutive final losses , they certainly had walked under some ladders and had a few black cats walk in front of them !

From 1988 Vancouver 86’ers dominated the league for the next 5 years winning the West Conference on 3 occasions and then the one division league it its last 2 seasons and also going on to win 4 straight play off finals only blotting their copybook by losing the last play off in 92 when losing to Winnipeg Fury in a 2 leg final.

They also set a record in Professional Sport in Canada by being unbeaten for 46 games spread over 1988 & 1989 seasons. I’m unsure as to whether that record is still intact ?

That last season in 1992 started badly with 2 teams Kitchener Kickers and Hamilton Steelers folding 3 weeks before opening day.  So it started amid financial problems with only a 6 team set up , a 20 game league followed by the play offs. As mentioned above  Winnipeg Fury winning the title of champions.

Such a shame the 86 ‘ers couldn’t complete the 5 year set.

So from the beginning of the league in 87 amid the World Cup enthusiasm it took 6 years to reach a dismal end in 92.

At this Canadian teams spread their wings and began entering USA Soccer Leagues, teams from Montreal , Toronto and Vancouver entered the 1993 American  Professional Soccer League.

Vancouver 86 ‘ers carried on with their winning ways , this time winning the 7 team 24 game league by 5 points over Colorado Foxes. Toronto Blizzard finished 5th and Montreal Impact bottom.

Unfortunately 86 ‘ers lost in the Play Off semi finals to Los Angeles Salsa on penalties 3-1 ( missing 3 of 4) after a 2-2  draw , to make matters worse Salsa had equalized in the 93rd minute.  Then Salsa played Colorado Foxes who had   beaten Tampa Bay Rowdies in the other Semi Final , the Foxes winning the final 3-1 AET at the Titan Stadium in Fullerton in front of a crowd of 10,743.

Other teams since then have joined the American system , at this moment in time for 2019 we have  =

Vancouver Whitecaps all in the MLS.

So it’s that time and about bloody time I hear some saying , its the new ”Super duper” , Monumental, Stupendous , Humongous ”Canadian Premier League”.

The big day is on Saturday April 27 , hence the need to write this quickly , when FC Forge entertain York 9 FC in the ‘905’ derby game at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton. The teams are only 40 miles apart and a good crowd is expected , the stadium has a soccer capacity of 10,016 normally but this has been upped and 20,000 + are expected.

The league in doing their homework is working on projected attendances of between 5,000 & 8,000 so some of the smaller grounds capacities may be tested. It should also do away with the sight of ”tarping” , this the use of matting / tarpaulin to cover rows of empty seats , please do not use the Urban dictionary if looking up tarping !

To make it clear to all I do not own a poncho.

The league is starting with 7 teams , it should haver been 8 but Ottawa Fury would not play ball and leave the American system.

Apparently pressure from the league , the Canada FA and CONCACAF should see them in the new league from next season 2020 , IF there is a next season.

The league is split into an Apertura  and a Clausura season and the champions of each will play each other , if its the same team the second best overall side will contest the final , so a team could win 2 championships and then lose in the  final game and  someone else is called ”Champion”. Great.

This is all a long way away and I wonder if all teams will complete the season , the travelling is horrendous and the cost will be astronomical.

Halifax Wanderers from Nova Scotia travel to Pacific FC from Langford , British Columbia  3 times this season whilst Pacific go to Halifax twice.

Its a distance of approx. 2,800 miles and to do this once  a season  is bad enough but to do it 2 / 3 times is insane . Do all clubs have the use of a League private jet ?  Its about a 7 hour non stop flight , if having to use the Nations Airlines its a 10 hour + flight with at least 1 change !

Perhaps a nice steady 3 day drive each way to build up team spirit

The Canadian Professional Soccer League is coming , Sat April 27th to be precise but what ‘s below this level of soccer  ?

The Canadian Soccer Association has designated 2 leagues to be the next in line , purely within Canada of course I will refer to them as Tier 2. The 2 leagues are the League1 Ontario ( L1 O)and the Premiere Ligue de Soccer du Quebec. (PLSQ)  As it says on the packet the L1 O is  regionalised around the Toronto area and the PLSQ around the Montreal area.

Both in this guise are fairly new leagues with the L1 O being formed in 2013 and commencing with the 2014 season whereas the PLSQ has been around a couple of years more starting with the 2012 season.

Teams have come and gone in both , but both have been adding teams recently as  time progressed until this season  when the L1O is reduced to 16 teams from the season high of 17  the previous season.

The L1 O began in 2014 with 9 teams which gradually grew to 17 and nowhas  16 for the 2019 season, meanwhile the PLSQ began in 2012 with 8 teams which lasted 2 seasons before dropping to 6 in 2013 since then however they have crept up to a high this season 2019 of 9 teams.

 

The winners of both of these leagues enters the prestigious Canadian Championship for 2020. The entrants for the 2019 edition are Vaughan Azzuri of the L1 O and A S Blainville of the PLSQ,

 

There is another Association the Soccer Federation of Canada (SFC) and another league the ‘Canadian Soccer League'(CSL)  that claim to be at this level, more on them later.

A quick update about what’s happened during the short lives of these leagues.

L1 O.

The league champions title has been dominated by Oakville Blue Devils and Vaughan Azzuri both winning the title twice with Toronto FC Academy winning it in its first year.

Toronto FC Academy were actually Toronto FC III team and spent all 5 seasons in the league until dropping out for 2019.

Of the 5 Cups that have taken place the Azzuri have 3 wins with Woodbridge Strikers the other 2.

For some reason the Cup is not being contested in 2019.

 

PSLQ.

The PSLQ has had 4 different winners in its 7 years , CS Mont Royal winning it 3 times , AS Blainville twice and CS Longueuil and FC St -Leonard once each.

FC St-Leonard were a Montreal side who only spent the first 2 seasons in the league winning it in its first season of 2012.

The cup has only been played since 2014 and has 4 different winners AS Blainville twice and one apiece for Lakeshore SC,  FC Gatineau and FC Lanaudiere.

Lakeshore SC were a short lived PLSQ side from Montreal spending just 2 seasons in it and winning the cup in 2015.

Lovely set up at Ballymun , out towards airport , only a very slow 30 min drive from Dublin Ferryport.

Bit of a windy crossing.

Unbeaten league leaders Crumlin United were in town and did a professional job on the ”mun” to the delight of their travelling fans.

Ballymun need the points but aren’t in immediate danger of relegation. EDIT. They just about stayed up with Crumlin easily winning the league.

En route now to Dunboyne v Portlaoise in the Lummy O’Reilly Cup  QF with time for a couple of pints before and after. Guinness of course or I might nip into Slevins after game to see if they have any craft beer/s on , they’ll certainly have local bottles !But they’ll be bloody expensive.

Arrived at this out of town ground , about a mile west of centre on the R156 with plenty of car parking available.

It was a choice of 1 for this afternoon fix , afernoon games are not common in the Republic at this level. Nowadays with a sudden likeness of 3G pitches and teams having lights Friday is becoming very popular.
